Our medicinal and synthetic chemistry department, which comprises more than 70 chemists, is directed by Dr Hazel Hunt.

Medicinal chemistry - in deploying our medicinal chemistry expertise, we take advantage of our thorough understanding of the key factors that impact drug discovery including CADD, development of structure-activity relationships, the interpretation of biological data and the importance of essential physicochemical characteristics. Furthermore, our scientists have expert understanding in the area of data integrity, intellectual property and patents.

Synthetic chemistry - our synthetic chemistry capabilities are extensive and include expertise in:

• Development of synthetic routes to previously unknown templates
• Microwave chemistry
• Synthesis of singles and small arrays
• Scale-up of intermediates and final compounds
• Process chemistry
• Multi-stage syntheses
• Natural product chemistry
• Chiral synthesis and resolution
• Prodrugs

We have invested in the latest equipment for synthesis and purification including microwave synthesisers and Companion purification systems.
